This is Nanatsugama, a scenic treasure along the Genkai Sea in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Over countless millennia, nature has carved the sheer cliffs into a dramatic formation of columnar joints—geometric rock pillars that hold a certain quiet order within their wildness. At their base, a sea of strikingly clear blue stretches to the horizon. Seven sea caves, lined up in perfect sequence, resemble sculptures shaped by the hand of the earth itself.
Inside the caves, shafts of light pierce the darkness, illuminating the deep, crystalline emerald waters—a breathtaking interplay of shadow and color. The view from the observation deck is splendid, yet it is from the deck of a sightseeing boat, gazing upward from the sea, that Nanatsugama reveals its most powerful, three-dimensional beauty. Here, ruggedness and serenity exist side by side, creating a natural artwork unlike any other.
Getting there: Approximately 25 minutes by car from JR Karatsu Station. Parking available.
Photographed: Late July 2025, 10:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.
Temperature: 31°C (87.8°F)
